CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL CITY OF SALAMANCA
The city of Salamanca is located in the Spanish province of the same name, 80 kilometers from the Portuguese border. The city acquired great importance back in the Iberian times. Under the Romans, there was a ferry across the Tormes River to the port of Cadiz. After the Arabs were replaced by Christians, under King Ferdinand II, Salamanca became the second largest city in the kingdom. The cultural heyday of the city dates back to the 16th century.
Due to its cultural and historical significance, the Old Town of Salamanca has been under UNESCO protection since 1985.
The main square of Salamanca, built in the 18th century in the Baroque style, is one of the most beautiful Spanish squares. Among the buildings standing on the square and made in the same style, the municipality building stands out, which has fragments in the Rococo style, and the Royal Pavilion, which is decorated with a bust of St. Fernando, medallions with images of Spanish monarchs, saints, discoverers, writers and scientists.
The Old Cathedral of Santa Maria and the New Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin are located adjacent to each other in the city center. The construction of the Old Cathedral dates back to the 12th and 14th centuries. The duration of its construction was reflected in the style of the building, which moved from Romanesque to Gothic. In the 16th century, due to the increase in the city’s population, it was decided to begin construction of a New cathedral next to the Old Cathedral. Its construction, which began in the late Gothic style and was completed in the Baroque style, lasted for more than two centuries. The building is decorated with a sculptural decoration.
The University of Salamanca, founded in 1254, is an architectural and historical landmark. Its main building was built in the 15th century, with a western facade in the Plateresque style. The University is famous for its ancient library, numbering more than 160 thousand volumes.
The Monastery of San Esteban, built by Dominican monks, most of whom were University professors, is of historical value. In the 16th century, the monks decided to rebuild it from a modest Gothic building into a building embodying the glory of the order. At one time, the monks supported Christopher Columbus in his intention to reach the shores of India across the Atlantic Ocean and appealed to the Catholic kings on this issue.
The Salamanca museums are of no less interest than the architectural attractions. The Museum of Automotive History houses more than two hundred vintage cars, including a Carl Benz tricycle, a 1922 Rolls-Royce, and the Cadillac of dictator Franco.
The Museum of Fine Arts, built in the 15th century, features works of ecclesiastical art, archaeological finds, and landscapes made by Flemish artists.
